But I Didn't Start Out as a Successful Wife, Mother, Family Traveler & Mompreneur
The idea of the 28-Day Challenge came to me as I stood in the laundry room stressed and overwhelmed, drowning in piles of clothes and I suddenly asked myself:
"Am I even a person anymore??!"
My oldest child of seven was fourteen and my youngest was one year old. I was swamped or drained in every way possible -- mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, spiritually, and financially.
From the moment I was thrust into consciousness (usually by a small child) until I fell into bed exhausted at night, all I did was meet the needs and demands of other people and the chaotic environment around me...
As a Stressed, Overwhelmed, Swamped Mom My Days Looked Like...
- Being forced into consciousness from a deep sleep by a child who needed something from me
- Never a moment for myself in the morning to 'start my day right'
- Walking from the bedroom to the kitchen to get breakfast for hungry children and everywhere I look I'm confronted by a mess that needs to be cleaned and clutter that needs picking up
- Preparing food for my kids to eat only to have them say "I'm hungry" five minutes after I put everything away
- Getting kids dressed and groomed only to find they've gotten naked and mussed their hair 10 minutes later
- Picking up toys and clutter just so I can find the things I need like a hairbrush or underwear for a child
- Starting a load of laundry that doesn't make a dent in the massive pile
- Feeding the kids second breakfast and cleaning it up again
- Endlessly washing faces and hands and wiping noses -- or trying to ignore them without success
- Changing a diaper that's WAY overdue and sagging to their knees
- Changing the laundry and adding to the overflowing pile to be folded
- Never having a moment to do something for myself -- read a book, take a nap, take a shower
- Attempting to homeschool and teach math, English, and social studies to five different grades, everyone needing help at the same time
- Stepping on Legos while looking for books, pencils, or craft supplies
- Feeding the kids again
- Cleaning up the kitchen again
- Sweeping the floor (for the first time in two weeks)
- Wondering what I'm going to make for dinner and if we have all the ingredients and what time I need to start it to fit it into the family schedule
- I try to work on some projects or take care of paying the bills or researching something or other -- but get frustrated when I get interrupted every 2 minutes!
- I run to the store to buy some items but spend the entire time wrestling the kids and come home even more angry than when I left.
- I throw together something for dinner, then wrangle everyone to the table, bribe and cajole the kids into eating, then beg and plead for help to clean up the kitchen because I'm too tired to do it myself.
- After the BATTLE OF BEDTIME I take some time for myself -- usually scrolling or binging -- until I crash into bed later than planned.
- Rinse and repeat. Groundhog Day
- You get the picture. Maybe you’ve had chaotic days (weeks, months, or years) similar to this?
But then I had a BREAKTHROUGH!! A discovery of the 'secret' that would change my life forever!
As I stood buried by laundry, swamped and overwhelmed, asking myself if I was even a person anymore, I'd had enough.
But I also had an insight (the 'secret'):
For things to change, I MUST change. Nothing gets better until I do.
It was exactly because I had NO TIME for myself — to think, to read, to grow, to improve, to plan, to dream, to set goals — that I HAD to MAKE time for myself IF I wanted things to change.
It was the only way to become me—a woman—again, and a better mother at the same time...
I remember telling myself,
“Mommy is a person too. And I’m going to start acting like it.”
So I started making tiny commitments—just 2 minutes a day—to do things that made me feel like an individual again.
Things like:
✔️ Move my body
✔️ Read from a book
✔️ Listen to a podcast

Small Commitments = BIG Shifts
I tracked simple habits for 28 days. That simple act—just committing and following through—gave me a sense of control I hadn’t felt in a long time.
More importantly, it gave me something I didn’t even realize I had lost:
Confidence.
Self-trust.
From there, everything started to shift.
Just by focusing on the things only I could do to make me and our family better—like reading, building my business, nurturing my children, and creating a vision for our family’s future.
Eventually, I got to the point where I hadn’t cleaned a bathroom or done laundry in over two years—because I had trained and empowered my (very willing!) children to handle it.
And it all started with one tiny decision:
To make time to improve MYSELF.

That's when I discovered the 'buried treasure' hidden all around us.
EVERY answer to every problem I had, every goal I wanted to achieve, every improvement I wanted to make—it lay 'buried' in plain sight—in books, audiobooks, and podcasts.
The more I read or listened, the richer I became -- mentally, emotionally, physically, in my marriage, in my parenting skills, and in my finances!

As I write this, I'm sitting in a beautiful home with a pool along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey where I'm spending two months living, studying, and working with my family.
This past year the income from our multi-six-figure location independent business was the highest it's ever been -- and is only climbing every month.
My children do their studies independently and willingly -- including instrument practice and foreign language studies.
My husband and I are passionately in love -- best friends and lovers. We just celebrated our 22nd anniversary at a luxury hotel on the Aegean Sea and left our children alone for four days in Turkey, that's how capable, confident, and trustworthy they are. Last year we left our 7 children ALONE for 14 days while we went to Portugal to celebrate -- because they are trustworthy and competent and take care of each other.
Next month we'll travel to Cappadocia to see the hot air balloons and explore the 18-level underground city of Derinkuyu before visiting Istanbul and then flying to Egypt to cruise the Nile and see the Pyramids of Giza, — all before moving to our new home base in Southern Portugal!
I am truly living my dream life. But it didn't happen by accident. It was created intentionally and deliberately.
And it all started when I learned how to use the 'buried treasure' found in books to improve every area of my life... treasure I could only find by first making time to read them!
That happened when I learned to take control of my time, days, and results by making and keeping small commitments to myself for just 28 days!
Yesterday, my day looked like this...

- Woke up gently to my six-year-old climbing into bed to cuddle with me. She let me sleep until I was ready to get up
- Willingly and joyfully made breakfast for my family while listening to an audiobook
- Worked out with my husband and children at a nearby park
- Laid out in the sun while my hubby and children did cold plunges in the pool (it’s only spring and still a little chilly here in Turkey)
- Took a long, hot shower (something I love to do) while listening to a podcast
- Made love with my husband
- Had my hair done by my daughter while I listened to a classic literature audiobook for my personal education -- from a list we're working on as a family
- Wrote 3800 characters for my book while my husband willingly took three of the kids grocery shopping (his idea). The other two silently and independently worked on their studies
- Worked on marketing and copywriting for my business
- Ate lunch prepared by my husband while we listened to music and danced in the kitchen with our kids and teens (our 17-year-old was the DJ)
- Helped my husband with marketing, web development, and copywriting for his business
- Paid bills and reviewed the finances (a role I enjoy doing, especially when we're earning plenty of money)
- Picked out colors and materials for repairs and remodeling on one of our investment properties (something else I love to do)
- Bought flights for our family to travel from Istanbul to Egypt in two months (I love trip planning)
- Did a live joint-coaching session with my husband for our Family Life Group Coaching
- Watched one episode of a favorite show on Netflix with our teenagers
- All of this happened while my children ages six to seventeen independently worked on their math, science, language arts, social studies, instrument practice, foreign language study, reading, arts & crafts (including drawing), physical education, and audiobooks (including classical literature)
- They also willingly did any chores or jobs asked of them such as unloading the dishwasher and taking out the trash
- Not to mention they showered and dressed themselves, including my youngest.

I'm getting lots of awesome habits dialed in. I'm adding and keeping some habits on my tracker from other months and for things that I need to do consistently.
Because of the challenge, not only am I improving, but our family culture is changing for the better. And we are traveling and adventuring so much more than ever, which we realized was a part of our family vision. Our family is on a river trip right now and my husband and I are heading for a romantic getaway soon after we get back. The challenge has been transformational.

Lost Weight, Read 2.5 Books + More!
I have lost 10 pounds since starting the 28-day challenge in November. I have more running endurance. I do sit-ups every day. My relationships with my husband and kids are better. Instead of getting angry with my teenage son I went for a walk with him. I am getting to work on time more often. I have listened to my devo/Bible plan every day. I have read 2.5 books. I need to share a small success. I have really been working on emotional mastery, mostly with my kids. They are home all day with me, so there is a lot of time for them to test my patience! I keep telling myself I am loving and kind, but then something happens and I am not unconditionally loving like I want to be. I listened to the video Greg shared about Rachel staying calm even with hard things. I redoubled my efforts and pictured myself being calm. Well, several hours later my very challenging son somehow did a factory reset on my phone. Lost everything but the photos. Well, I didn't even get mad, we had a calm talk about why we have rules and why they should be obeyed. I think he was shocked I didn't come unglued! (I did shed a few tears of pure sorrow at the work it will take me to get things where I want them.) So this was my success. I’m 52 and for the past 20 years, I have been Dreaming about a more fulfilling life. The effect is real and makes a HUGE difference!
Two things that have helped me stay sane are the strategies that the Denning taught—choosing an emotion for the day and the 3 word alarm. I seriously think those 2 tiny little things helped so much this week. I could either wake up feeling stressed and frazzled or I could focus on a word like peaceful or cheerful. The effect was real and made a huge difference!! My husband is doing the 28 day challenge with me too. He is an institute teacher at UVU and was getting all new classes of students this week. He got knocked out with a narly virus and was hacking up a lung, losing his voice, monster headaches etc. but he didn't want to miss class because it was the first week. He said he was lying in bed awake in the middle of the night feeling stressed and worried and then he realized he could choose his emotion for the day and he chose the word powerful. Now I Understand the Point of Living Intentionally
This challenge is not only encouraging but so helpful in making me see the point of intentional living. It’s empowering because it lets me get to where I want to be. Mindset Is HUGE!!
I have been trying to wake up early for months, but with no success. Since this challenge I've been able to wake up before 6 most days this month and have hit my goal of waking up at 5 for a few days in a row. This might not seem like a big deal, but for me it is HUGE! I’ve always hated mornings, but once I started to tell myself that I love mornings I've slowly started to believe it. My Biggest Breakthroughs
I think my biggest breakthroughs are on re-creating powerful morning, afternoon, and evening routines. I have the big picture but need to remind myself not to expect to do have it mastered all at once. Right now they are my dream routines and I'm hoping to get gradually better at them. Cutting out soda! This is HUGE for me!
I did it! And its not so bad.
I was drinking several diet Cokes a day before I started the challenge. I didn't cut it out completely yet because set the goal for 5 days a week. But this still feels huge to me, especially psychologically, to stop identifying as a person who drinks soda every day.
Makes It Easier to Put One Foot In Front Of The Other
The last 2 weeks I have gone through some really, really hard emotional stuff. It’s big stuff coming at me from every angle—things born out of hopes crushed. That sounds really dramatic, but this stuff has been so hard. Do you know what has gotten me out of bed? Habits! Putting one foot in front of the other. Learning and relearning emotional release skills. Feeling the pain, admitting things are hard, and moving forward with the things I already have in place to help myself. I 'Brought the Tide' to My Family This Week

I am learning to focus on progress over perfection
1. No soda for 3 weeks. Historically in my life I could easily go without soda for weeks, months, or perhaps even years. Just prior to the challenge I was forming a new soda habit with a free fountain at work. Getting back on track just in time. I also had the courage to pour out an extra soda at home.2. My kids had their first pretty successful week of using the routines and chore chart and we’re on week two! I even made a simple chart for my husband to get his ideas/inspirations going.
3. I am learning to continue with progress over perfection. Learning even if I drop the ball for a day or days, I can pick back up. I don’t have to give up and quit because I was imperfect. The old me would’ve figured I’m not made for this since “I’m not keeping up” or not even done this post because it’s overdue. Cheers to perfect imperfection!

The Whole Family Got on Board With Keeping Our Commitment!!
Thanks so much for the discussion in the coaching call yesterday about sugar and eating well! I brought it up with the family. It was SO timely because my husband had gotten a crappy dessert from a restaurant for him and 2 of my girls the previous day, and then last night we were planning on going to get ice cream from a place we heard about that is supposedly really good. I brought up the coaching call discussion and our family's commitment that we had made after watching That Sugar Film. Everyone was on board with keeping our commitment, except my 10-year-old who was super disappointed and said we were breaking a promise 😆. I was most impressed with my 13-year-old. She is one of the worst in the family for eating junk every opportunity she gets. So, I was happy that she was adamant about us keeping our commitment. In the past, she would've been one of the kids saying it was dumb that we hold such a high standard compared to everyone else and that we should be more "normal." So, thanks, team! Married Bliss After One Month of Marriage Habits!
After 21 years of marriage, some of which were the worst years of my life, this month has been like a honeymoon. Ok... well we haven't been on any beaches and life still had minor bumps in the road, BUT we are ridiculously happy, very snuggly, and making a weekly date each week despite the fact that each of us had a turn being out of town for the weekend this month. I am pinching myself to make sure this is really happening! We are working the habits from date night to having sex 4-6 times a week. The one habit that needs work is reading/listening to the same content. Instead, I'll share my enthusiasm with a nugget and invite him to read along. We share audible so I can ask him to listen to [a recommended book] there.
I listened to [the recommended book] and it was a game-changer. Hands down. I am learning to stop behaviors that create unintentional problems,, to not ask questions that lead into unwanted fights, to start believing that my husband wants to make me happy, and to express pure desires instead of telling him what to do. Also, listened to [recommended book] and [another recommended book] and both had valuable insights!
This is incredible! I want to share it with all my married friends!
